The standard of refereeing in inter county hurling and football has in my opinion drastically changed over the last 3 or 4 years.
It seems to me the these days every Referee in the country has their own interpretation of the rules and its leading to a lot of
inconsistencies in their decision making in games. This in my opinion effects players in games because they are confused in
knowing what is and what is not a free? Over the years you had basically two styles of refereeing where one was strict and blew
everything and the other was lenient and let the game flow. Now in games the consistency is gone out the window completely
because the ref is strict one min then for the other team he is very lenient with his calls and that has to be very frustating for
players because all they want is consistency and for the game to flow.
What i see a lot in games now is someone is soloing out with a ball or going through on goal and they are been pulled and
dragged all over the place and the ref lets him play on and 2 seconds later it might break down and he loses the ball.
Then a player from the opposite side would be doing the same, Soloing out or in and he gets a slight tug and the ref
blows for a foul and could even book the player for that nothing foul! These inconsistencies really bug me and that is
only one or two examples of the way the games are been reffed these days. I could go on forever flagging up whats
wrong with the standard of refeering but i just wanted to flag it and get a debate going and see what other people think
of the way the game is been reffed and if you think the standard is poor or generally ok?
