Johnny goes to Croker
(In The Style Of Joxer Goes To Stuttgart)
It was in the year of 09 in the lovely month of September
When the Cats they were swarmin', Tipp fans bawling till November
With rosary beads and sandwiches for Croker we began
Johnny packed his flask a tae and jump leads for the van
Well, some of the lads had never been away from home before
'Twas the first time Willie put his foot outside of Tull-ogher
Before we left for Croker we knew we'd need a plan
So we all agreed that Johnny was the man to drive the van
In Dublin the M50 'twas like the long mile road
There was every make or car and van all carryin' the full load
Ford Transits and Hiace's and an ould Banger from Muckalee
With engine over heatin' from long haulin' duty-free
There were fans from Ballyragget, Ballycallan and Ballyhale
On the journey of the lifetime and we were on the ale
Johnny met O’Briens daughter on the banks of the river Nore
And he told her she'd be welcome in Ballyragget forevermore
As soon as we got to Drumcondra we got the wagons in a ring
Richie got out the bodhran, Aidan played the mandolin
Oh There was fans there from everywhere attracted by the sound
At the next Fleagh Ceoil in Dublin, Johnny passed the flagon round
But the session it ended when we finished all the stout
The air mattresses inflated and the sleepin' bags rolled
As one by one we fell asleep Johnny had a dream
He dreamt himself and Brian Cody sat down to pick the team
Johnny dreamt they both agreed on PJ straight away
And Kav, Noel Hickey and Jackie Tyrell were certainly to play
But tempers they began to rise, patience wearing thin
Cody wanted Eddie Brennan, but Johnny wanted Reid
Then the dream turned into a nightmare, Johnny stuck the head in Brian
Who wanted to bring John Power and DJ Carey back
When the cock crew in the morning, it crew both loud and shrill
Johnny woke up in his sleepin' bag many miles from The Hill
The next morning none of the experts gave us the slightest chance
They said the Tipp team would lead us on a merry dance
With blue and gold banners all them Tipp fans for victory were set
Until Henry Shefflin got the ball and stuck it in the net
What happened next was history, brought tears to many eyes
That day will be the highlight in many people's lives
Well Johnny climbed right over the Hill and the next time he was seen
Was arm and arm with Brian Cody, singin' revenge for Ninety-One
Now Willie’s back in the village he's livin' with his mam
And Brian Cody has been proclaimed Kilkenny’s greatest man
Do you remember O’brien’s daughter on the banks of the river Nore
Ah jeez Well didn't she show up in Ballyragget last week and...
